Sony PlayStation VR 2

At CES 2022 Tech Expo, Sony divulged more details about their upcoming successor to the Playstation VR. The PSVR 2 will be for the Sony PS5 and it’s games, and will boast 4K HDR for both eyes (2000 x 2040 per eye), a 110 degree field of view, frame rates of 90/120Hz, and foveated rendering. For those that don’t know what foveated rendering is, it’s a rendering technique that reduces the image quality in the peripheral vision which reduces the rendering workload and it uses an eye tracker integrated within the VR headset so it’s always crystal clear wherever the player looks. This allows for faster processing, and smoother gameplay.

There are also new sensory features added to the PSVR2: a single built-in motor in the headset to add a tactile element, headset feedback, eye tracking, 3D audio, and a PSVR 2 Sense controller to create a more immersive experience than ever before. The motion sensors are a  six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer). There are four cameras for headset and controller tracking, with an IR camera for eye tracking on each eye. There is a built-in microphone, and a Stereo headphone jack. The system connects to the PS5 via a USB Type-C connection. Unfortunately, the headset connects wired, not via wireless which is unfortunate.

These stats make the PSVR 2 visually slightly better than the Oculus Quest 2, but the lack of wireless connection can inhibit the immersion that the PSVR 2 boasts of. Currently, there is no price given by Sony, and the release date is rumored to be sometime during the holiday season of 2022.
